“GM Crops – Where are we now”

Biography

Dr Harwood leads the Centre’s Crop Transformation Group and Crop Transformation Facility with a particular interest in wheat and barley. She also manages the BRACT (Biotechnology Resources for Arable Crop Transformation) facility which provides crop transformation resources to the research community.

Abstract

GM crops have now been grown commercially for 20 years. During this time technologies have rapidly advanced and uptake of GM technology by farmers worldwide has accelerated. However, Europe still struggles with the regulation of crops generated using GM and lags behind.

In this lecture Dr Harwood will discuss how technologies have advanced leading to a new generation of techniques available to plant breeders. She will briefly cover the current situation regarding GM cultivation worldwide and then look at the situation in the EU, including recent attempts to overcome the deadlock in the regulatory process and the problems posed in regulating the products of new technologies.  Finally she will look at what is in the research pipeline and what this could mean for the development of improved crops for the future.

Registration starts at approximately 1.30pm and there will be tea, coffee and biscuits available on arrival.
